The members of the Irish Biblical Association are engaged professionally with and/or take a personal interest in the Jewish and Christian Scriptures. The Association arranges at least three meetings a year, two in Dublin and one in Belfast. The IBA also has an Annual Conference with includes four talks by international scholars, an Emerging Scholars' Forum, where beginning scholars can discuss their studies in an encouraging atmosphere and our Annual General Meeting.  The Association also organizes two Bible Afternoons annually for those interested in the pastoral uses of Bible Studies.  The IBA publishes an annual periodical (The Proceedings of the Irish Biblical Association or PIBA). The Publications Committee of the Association is actively engaged in the publication of early Irish commentaries and apocrypha.

The IBA, originally called the ‘Catholic Biblical Association of Ireland’, was established in 1966, with Monsignor P Boylan chairing the first meeting. The original aims included the encouragement of scholarly and popular studies of the Bible. At the first meeting Wilfrid Harrington OP was elected Vice-Chairman and Martin McNamara MSC was elected Treasurer. They are both Honorary Life Members, along with Profs John J. Collins, Kevin Cathcart and Jerome Murphy-O'Connor OP. In 1972 the name of the association was changed to the ‘Irish Biblical Association’. The IBA is a non-denominational body.

The aims of the Association include the following:

The Irish Biblical Association welcomes new members. There are two kinds of membership, ordinary and associate. Associate members are those interested in supporting and taking part in the events arranged by the IBA. Ordinary membership is for those with a post-graduate qualification in biblical studies.

As a member you will be kept informed about the various events organized by the Association as well as other events that might be of interest to members. Members' subscriptions make it possible for the Association to organize lectures and conferences, and to invite distinguished speakers from both home and abroad.

Members are formally accepted into the Association at the annual AGM in March/April. Prospective members who send in their application form prior to the AGM are welcome to attend any meetings of the IBA and will be placed on our mailing list immediately on receipt of the application form.

The current annual subscription rates are:

Ordinary member, €30

Associate member, €20

Special associate member, €10.  This rate, for three years, is available for students and those recently qualified.
